Let’s face it: dry slopes are cool, but everyone prefers the real thing. Then April comes, season ends, snow melts: it is over. It’s real-snow-deprivation time! Right? Well… no!
That’s because, in case you didn’t know, it is possible to snowboard on real snow, in the mountains, in summer.
There’s two ways of doing that.
Remember something of those geography lessons? Well it would do ya good! ‘Cause your first option is to travel some place where it’s winter! Somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere... for example, South America... ever heard of Bariloche, Las Leñas, Valle Nevado, Termas de Chillán...? Sure you have! Well, if you go to these resorts towards the end of June and on, you’ll find there’s loads of snow there!
But there is also another option to snowboard during the summer without having to emigrate to South America. Ok, we’ll tell you the secret:glaciers. A glacier is a large mass of ice and snow that forms when the rate of snowfall constantly exceeds the rate at which snow melts. Though often associated with the Ice Age, glaciers are to be found in continental Europe, in countries such as Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Norway, Sweden and France. The good news is that glaciers are sometimes located inside ski resorts. These ski resorts close their facilities at the end of April but re-open in the middle of June and until the end of August. So for a couple of months it is possible to snowboard on real snow, in the mountain, in summer. Examples of these resorts are: Tignes and Les deux Alpes in France, Hintertaux, Kaprun or Sölden in Austria, Sass Fee, Verbier or Zermatt in Switzerland; Passo Tonales, Valsenales in Italy etc.
Well then... the best news is that SMK camps offers you both options: snowboard summer camps in Bariloche/Termas de Chillán (Argentina/Chile) and snowboard camps in the glaciers of Les 2 Alpes (France) and Saas Fee (Switzerland).
